IOM and Police awareness campaign to promote community safety in the Republic of Moldova marked the start
Chisinau, November 28 – The International Organization for Migration (IOM), Mission to the Republic of Moldova, in collaboration with the General Inspectorate of Police, is conducting a series of awareness-raising events across the country to promote community safety principles. The activities, organised in the cities of Ocnita, Rezina, Donduseni and Causeni, aim to enhance public awareness, combat corruption, address gender-based violence and improve collaboration between authorities and communities for a safer environment.
The Community Police awareness campaign has kicked off in November in Chisinau to encourage active cooperation between residents and law enforcement, to foster collaboration between citizens, migrants, and Community Police for a safer Moldovan society, as well as to protect and respect fundamental rights and freedoms.
The community forums, titled “Active Partnership for Community Safety”, brought together representatives of local authorities, law enforcement agencies, educational institutions and national experts to address critical social issues, such as preventing corruption and gender-based violence.
The campaign also includes educational sessions, workshops, exhibitions of pupils’ drawings and children’s theatre performances. These interactive and engaging activities convey high social value messages on personal safety, road traffic safety rules, when and how to use the Police telephone numbers to report emergencies, how to combat bullying and foster an inclusive environment with kindness and respect.
As part of the joint IOM-GIP campaign, a video is being shown daily throughout November on trolleybus monitors in the capital Chisinau.
These initiatives, supported by IOM Moldova with generous financial support from the Government of Canada, are based on the concept of Community Engagement and Policing which aims to encourage citizen and community participation in policing activities, from providing information and reassurance to assisting police in identifying and providing solutions to local social problems and emergencies.
