Consultations on Integration of Migration into Moldova's Development Strategies at Local Level
On 12 September 2017, at the Government's House were held extensive consultations on the priority activities for the third phase of the Global Program Mainstreaming Migration into National Development Strategies (MOMID), implemented by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the Program the United Nations in Moldova. The program has been implemented for six years in several countries: Serbia, Kyrgyzstan, Morocco, Tunisia, Ecuador, Jamaica and Bangladesh, including Moldova.
The second phase of the program is currently being implemented to support the Government of the Republic of Moldova in its efforts to mainstream migration issues into national strategies and development planning processes as well as providing qualified expertise in monitoring and adapting better approaches in terms of migration and development.
Ms. Olga Coptu, Head of Diaspora Bureau and Mr. Antonio Polosa, Head of IOM Moldova opened the meeting. Mr. Polosa said: "Migration is one of those major policy issues in which we can and need to work jointly in order to define and achieve a comprehensive and coherent approach. […] Since the start of the project’s first phase in 2012, Moldova made significant progress in developing a vision and a framework for ensuring the practical mainstreaming of migration into national development strategies”.
The meeting was attended by representatives of the State Chancellery, Ministry of Health, Labor and Social Protection, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European Integration, Ministry of Public Infrastructure, Ministry of Agriculture, Regional Development and Environment, Ministry of Justice, National Bureau of Statistics, Bureau for Migration and Asylum, Congress of Local Authorities of Moldova, United Nations Development Program (UNDP) in Moldova, UNDP’s "Migration and Local Development" Project, Academy of Sciences of Moldova, National Bank of Moldova, Public Services Agency, Tourism Agency, National Social Insurance House, Medical Insurance House, Institute of Labor and State Archives
Mr. Ghenadie Cretu, Migration and Development Programme Coordinator, IOM reviewed the achievements of the current program and the reasons behind the request for approval/initiation of the third phase of the program – the most important being the expansion of integration efforts of local migration.
